In order to avoid a dead band and to remove scale factor nonlinearities, particularly in the case of low rates of rotation, it is proposed for a fiber optic interferometer rateof-rotation sensor which is reset by phase ramp via a digital control circuit to use as demodulation signal within the control circuit a signal that is statistically independent of all parasitic signals coming into consideration and originates from a modulation signal generator provided with a random number generator, which moreover provides in a statistically distributed manner a reversal of the phase modulator signal to integral values of .pi./2 of the interferometer characteristic.
