PURPOSE:To obtain a lubricating oil having improved resistance to a halogen gas. CONSTITUTION:A sulfur compound represented by the formula S-[(CH2)nCOOR<1>]2. (wherein (n) is an integer of 1-10 and R<1> is a 10-20C alkyl or alkylphenyl) and/or a sulfur compound represented by the formula (wherein (n) is an integer of 1-10; R<2> is a 10-20C alkyl or alkylphenyl; and R<3> and R<4> are each independently hydrogen or a 1-10C alkyl) is incorporated into a synthetic lubricating oil base.
