A heat-developable photosensitive image recording material has (a) a photosensitive Ag halide layer positioned between (b) a silver salt oxidising layer and (c) an image dye providing layer. The material also has (d) an image-receiving layer and contains (e) a thermal solvent and (f) a reducing agent. The layers are carried by a first support or are sandwiched between first and second supports. One or more of the components (a), (b), (c and (f) form a competitive chemical imaging system which gives an imagewise distribution of diffusible image dye in response to an imagewise distribution of soluble silver ions and/or soluble Ag complex during heat processing.
