A process for the preparation of lactic acid esters by fermentation of mixtures containing sugars, conversion of the lactic acid resulting from the fermentation into its salts and subsequent esterification, characterised in that a) alkaline earth metal carbonate or bicarbonate is added to the fermentation broth in order to neutralise at least 50 mol% of the resulting lactic acid, b) the resulting fermentation broth is adjusted to a pH from 7 to 13 by adding NH3 and CO2, and the resulting precipitates are separated off, c) the ammonium lactate solution obtained and purified in this way is esterified with an alcohol |
