In applying a semi-liquid lining compound to the inside of a container closure 7 the latter is placed on a spinning, vacuum chuck 10 and is raised thereby into a lining position adjacent the end of a nozzle 6, from which a predetermined quantity of lining compound is metered into the closure 7, the movement of the chuck and the metering of the compound being in timed relationship. The nozzle 6 is supplied from a reservoir 1 surrounded by a heating jacket 2, the heating medium 3 in the jacket being kept at a constant temperature by coil 4 and part of the heating medium being circulated through a coil 13 around the nozzle 6 to maintain the compound in the nozzle at substantially the same temperature as that in the reservoir 1. Means can be provided for delivering closures continuously to a lining station and removing them therefrom and depositing them on a conveyor belt which carries them through a compound curing oven. After the oven a cooling device may be provided to cool the closures and the belt. Several lining stations may feed on to a common conveyor belt passing through the curing oven.
