PURPOSE:To provide a new sulfur-containing polyol having high water solubility and high extreme-pressure performance and useful as a high performance extreme-pressure additive. CONSTITUTION:A sulfur-containing polyol of formula I (R<1>, R<2> together form a double bond; R<1> is -S-CH2-CH2-OH; R<2> is -H), namely 2-(2-hydroxyethylthio)-2- butene-1,4-diol of formula II, and 2,3-bis(2-hydroxyethylthio)-1,4-butanediol of formula III. The compound of formula I is easily obtained by subjecting 1,4- butynediol and mercaptoethanol to a heating or UV-irradiating treatment in the presence of a free radical initiator. The compound of formula I is added to a water-soluble metal-processing oil in a concentration of 0.01-50wt.%, preferably 0.1-30wt.%. |
