Process for vitrification of waste enclosed in a container (10). According to the invention the said process comprises stages consisting, in a furnace (200) raised to a temperature Tf higher than the melting temperature Tc of the container by a high-temperature generator (100) with a heat jet (110) pointed along an axis D and in which the jet temperature is Tj, - in placing the container in the furnace, on the axis D of the said heat jet, the temperature difference Tf-Tc being adjusted so that the said heat jet (110) pierces the said container locally and brings the waste to a temperature Td which is higher than the average temperature Tf of the furnace, - in producing the complete vitrification of the container and of the waste to a vitreous magma (11) at a temperature substantially equal to the temperature Tf of the furnace, - in recovering the said vitreous magma out of the furnace. Application to the treatment of waste without detriment to the environment.
