To wind a bobbin at a sewing machine, as a supply of lower thread material, the bobbin is rotated initially in one direction to build up a thread reserve, and then the bobbin is stopped and the thread (109) is held. The bobbin rotation is reversed, to form a thread loop (159), and the remainder of the thread is wound on the bobbin in the opposite direction to the reserve winding. Also claimed is a bobbin winding mechanism, with a bobbin (113) for the lower thread at the sewing machine (101). It has a system to reverse the direction of the bobbin drive (124) with a unit (135) to deflect and hold the thread (109) on the bobbin (113) during the change of rotating direction.
