PURPOSE:To emphasize an edge different in direction in each picture element when the position/shape/the number of lines is not previously known in a picture of low quality. CONSTITUTION:A directional picture generating means 102 inputs an original picture inputted from a picture input means 100 through an input picture switching means 101 and finds out a local edge direction. An edge detecting means 103 smooths the original picture in a direction parallel with the edge based upon the found result and detects the edge in a vertical direction to generate an edge image. An image synthesizing means 104 adds the obtained image to the original. picture to generate an emphasized picture. The emphasized picture is stored in a picture storing/selecting means 105 and transferred to the means 101 to repeat emphasizing operation. A repeat control means 106 compares the emphasized picture obtained at present and an emphasized picture obtained in the past, controls the repeat of operation, and when the past emphasized picture is more preferable or the number of repeats reaches a set value, sends the emphasized picture to a picture display means 107 as an output. |
