PURPOSE:To compensate contrast dependency on an angle of field by forming a specific projection shape on a film surface before an orientation film is formed. CONSTITUTION:The optical compensation sheet RF1 is formed by providing plural projections which are 0.01-10mum in height (h) on a transparent film so that the height (h) and a means diameters D have relation h/d=1/100-2/1 and the area rate S to the surface area is 0.1-20%, and forming a layer containing discoid molecules thereupon. When natural light L0 is made incident on a liquid crystal display element, the light is polarized by a polarization plate A into linearly polarized light L1, which is modulated into elliptically polarized light L3 through phase delay operation when passing through an optical anisotropic element RF1. Then the light is modulated in opposite-phase elliptically polarized light L4 by passing through a liquid crystal cell TNC and put back into linearly polarized light L5 by passing through an optical anisotropic element RF2. Consequently, the same transmissivity is obtained however the natural light L0 is made obliquely incident and a display of high quality having no field angle dependency is obtained. |
