PURPOSE:To provide a controller and a control method capable of eliminating torque variation at the time of air-fuel ratio variation, and making improvement in fuel economy compatible with improvement in operatability. CONSTITUTION:A controller for an automobile comprises an external status detection means 1 for detecting external status at the time of running of an automobile, a running environment judging means 2 for estimating present running environment in response to the external status, a data memory means 3 for storing the data for varying operational characteristic, a changeover means 4 for switching the data, a control quantity calculation means 5 for calculating a control quantity on the basis of the data, and a control actuator 6 for the controlling a control object. Engine output can be effectively utilized since the air-fuel ratio is changed arbitrarily in response to variation of the running environment, and then fuel consumption can be decreased and operatability can be improved since switching of the air-fuel ratio can be carried out according to the running environment. |
