摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain the device holding clear and high gradation number by interposing a ferroelectric or antiferroelectric liquid crystal material or a material, in which this liquid crystal material and a high polymer compound coexist, between a pair of substrates of the device and forming the structure of the device so that it satisfies a specific relation. CONSTITUTION:This device is obtained by interposing a ferroelectric or antiferroelectric liquid crystal material or a material that this liquid crystal material and a high polymer compound coexist in, between a pair of substrates each of which has an electrode or electrodes and at least one of which has light transmissivity and further, either of which has thin film transistors connected to the electrodes. In this structure of the device, the relation represented by the formula exists. In the formula: Ps is the spontaneous polarization; CLC is the capacitance between the picture element electrodes; V is the voltage value of the pulse voltage applied between the picture element electrodes; W is the pulse width of the pulse voltage; tauLC is the time constant of each of the picture elements; S is the area of each of the picture element electrodes; Vrem is the residual voltage due to the residual charge between the picture element electrodes just before applying the next pulse.</p>
