PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of generated ozone while accomplishing the miniaturization and the cost reduction of the device by bringing an electrostatic charging member into contact with a photoreceptor and applying a voltage to the electrostatic charging member to electrostatically charge the photoreceptor. CONSTITUTION:An electrostatic charging power supply 10 which can be switched between positive and negative polarities is connected with a conductive roller 9, and the prescribed voltage is applied to the photoreceptor by the power supply 10 through the roller 9 while bringing the roller 9 into contact with the photoreceptor 25. The applied voltage is basically different from that in corona discharging and nearly the same as the electrostatic charge potential of the photoreceptor (<=1kV). The voltage whose polarity is positive, or negative is applied to the photoreceptor 25 while bringing the electrostatic charging member such as the conductive roller 9 into contact with the photoreceptor 25 in such a way, then, it is made possible to electrostatically charge with both positive and negative polarities by use of one electrostatic charging member, and the miniaturization of an entire copying machine can be accomplished. And also, electrostatic charging is executed by bringing the electrostatic charging member into contact with the photoreceptor, then, it is good enough to apply a voltage <=1kV, and such the effect that the occurrence of the ozone is remarkably reduced so as to be almost disregarded is obtained. |
