Prepn. of quat. ammonium salts of catalytic-sulphonic acids

Prepn. of quat. ammonium salts of carboxylic acid-hydroxyalkane sulphonic acids of formula (I) or (IA) (some of which are new) comprises (a) condensing a hydroxyalkane sulphonic acid of formula (II) with a dicarboxylic acid of formula (III) or an opt. alkoxylated monocarboxylic acid of formula (IV) of 60-120 deg C and at a pressure at which water boils; (b) directly removing the water of reaction and any diluent water present; and (c) dissolving the reaction mixt. after finish of the reaction in an organic solvent and treating it at 18-35 deg C with a base to form the quat. ammonium salt. In the formulae n = 2-4; m = 0-12; R<1> = 1-22C alkyl gp., aryl or aralkyl gp.; p = 2 and/or 3; q = 0-200; and M = NH4, primary, sec. or tert. alkylammonium (1-4C alkyl) or glucammonium. Cpds. (IA) having R<2> = alkyl with 10-22C, aryl or alkyl are claimed as novel. Pref. condensation step (a) is at 90-110 deg C and 2-100 mbar, esp. in a water jet vacuum. The novel claimed cpds. have n = 2; p = 2; and q = 1-20.
