<p>A combined retainer clip (10) and shaft (12) for axially fastening a mechanical element (16) to the shaft (12) includes a shaft (12) being hardened to a predetermined hardness. The retainer clip (10) is formed of an annular body (20) with a frusto-conical annulus (26) surrounding a generally central aperture (30) and hardened to a hardness higher than the hardness of the shaft (12). The retainer clip (10) is mounted on the shaft (12) at a predetermined position to fixedly mount the mechanical element (16) on the shaft (12). In one embodiment, a plurality of notches (46) are circumferentially spaced about the portion of the annulus (26) surrounding the aperture (30) in the body (20) to form a discontinuous shaft engaging surface.</p> |
