The system has a lifting device (21) to handle all palette stacks etc (9,10). A lower and an upper longitudinal transporter (22,23) exchange at least one upper and lower palette between the stacks. At least one stack is open at the top, for manual and/or automatic handling or insertion of workpieces etc. For manual handling, the top palette is positioned at an ergonomically favourable height. Two palette stacks may be located next to each other in a storage trolley (2), and are moved sidewards in phases.
