The clipless pedal system for mountain bikes or other bicycles comprises a pedal body (202), at least one side of which has a mushroom or T-shaped extension (207) which is created by extending tabs (211, 212) over a small diameter neck (210). The cleat (250) consists of a mounting plate (252) which can be attached to the sole of mountain biking shoe, and has a generally open interior of sufficient dimensions to permit insertion of the head (208) therein. Engaging means (254) extend inwardly at a spacing corresponding to the head (208) of the extension (207). The engaging means (254) can be brought around the neck (210) of the extension (207) to catch just below the head (208) of the extension (207). An eccentric stop (264) prevents forward motion of the cleat (250) relative to the pedal (200) beyond a predetermined point. A spring tab (266) is used to releasably lock the cleat (250) and pedal extension (207) together once the head (208) is in position with respect to the engaging means (254) and in contact with the stop (264).
|
