The process is for use in a motor vehicle in which an engine output control member (e.g. throttle flap or fuel injection pump or valve) (10) is connected (12) to the accelerator pedal (14), and can be overruled (16) by switching (20) of a signal from a limiter (18) responsive to comparison (36) of an actual measurement (48) with a max. value stored in a memory (42) at the instigation (46) of the driver. The switching is performed by a calculator (24) which permits changing-down with double-declutching on downgrade, by nullifying the limit in response to appropriate signals from sensors of clutch operation (30) and neutral gear selection (32).
