In accordance with the invention, there is provided a process for preparing a ceramic casting composition. In the process a mixture of a kaolin clay and water at a pH in the range of from 2.8 to 7.5 is first treated with a minor proportion by weight of a water soluble organic compound having a plurality of basic groups and a weight average molecular weight not greater than 1000; the treated mixture of kaolin clay and water is then partially dewatered, if necessary, to form a plastic mass having a solids concentration in the range of from 50% to 78% by weight which is then subjected to mechanical working in the plastic state and, finally, the mechanically worked, treated kaolin clay is formed into a ceramic casting composition.
