A bobbin (9) for a loom shuttle, to carry the weft yarn wound round the bobbin core, has a yarn catch unit (12) fitted pref. at one end before or together with the positioning at the rotary mechanism for the bobbin winding. The weft yarn is wound round the bobbin, through the bobbin rotation and, when fully wound, the trailing end (15) of the yarn is passed to the catch unit (12) for it to be held in place, to allow handling of the wound bobbin. The yarn catch unit (12) is structured for fitting to one end of the shuttle bobbin, to take the trailing yarn end from a fully wound bobbin, so that the final wound layer is held firmly against the underlying layers and/or the bobbin surface. Also claimed is a system for a bobbin change at the shuttle which is triggered by the loom program control and/or the shuttle system. The remaining weft is caught while the used bobbin is removed and a fresh bobbin inserted with the yarn catch. The grip mechanism removes the yarn catch from the new bobbin, and the shuttle and grip are moved away from each other to draw out the wound weft from the new bobbin, to be led to the caught trailing yarn of the old bobbin, where the yarn ends are joined together.
