Internal combustion engine with electric starter motor

The combustion engine (1) comprises an electric motor (3) which has a starter pinion. Once the engine is running, the pinion is controlled to drive a cooling medium pump (5) in the cooling circuit (4). The motor is arranged to drive the pump at a constant speed of rotation. The pump is connected to a cooling medium passage (11) in an end region of the cylinder head (10) via an outlet union (9). The pump is joined by the inlet union (14) to a radiator return channel (8).
