The active stamping surface faces the pad (43) in the body (13) rest position. In the active position the stamp is held spaced above the pad by a spacer with a resilience to be overcome by the force required for stamping. Pref. the spacer is a spring assembly with one or more spring elements, possibly forming the stamp support legs. Next to the stamp body the spacer has retainers (9) for securing the spring(s), typically in the form of a continuous, U-shaped profile. The retainer may be interconnected by a base plate.
