Flat hollow rayon fibres, suitable for paper manufacture, are made by extruding a viscose containing 2 to 4% of sodium carbonate and having a Aottenroth value of 15 to 30 cc into an aqueous spinning bath maintained at 45 to 70 DEG C., the bath containing 100 - 200 g/l of sulphuric acid, at least 280 g/l of sodium sulphate and 5 to 80 g/l of zinc sulphate, stretching the filaments at a draw ratio of 1.5 to 3.0 in the spin bath, and then passing them through a second aqueous bath maintained at above 70 DEG C and containing less than 20 g/l of sulphuric bath, while stretching them to the extent of 0 to 60% (see Adg. B5B). Paper may be made from the filaments thus obtained by cutting the filaments into fibres about 3 to 5 mm. long, dispersing the fibres in water, and laying them on a wire mesh screen in the conventionnal manner. The fibres are said to be self bonding and not to require the use of a bonding agent.
