A bead lock drum consists of a centre drive shaft (12) on which slide mirror-image first and second carriages (16,18). First and second carriages (16,18) slidably carry mirror-image third and fourth carriages (20,22) and fifth and sixth carriages (30,32). Shaft (12) contains threaded drive means to adjustably control the axial movements of carriages (16,18,20,22,30,32). A drum circumference is defined by first and second sets (250,256) of segments (204) mounted on the first and second carriages (16,18) and on the third and fourth carriages (20,22) by linkages. Linkages may be actuated by balanced rack and pinion mechanisms associated with the drive means of a shaft (12), in order to move segments (204) radially outward to define an increased drum circumference. Fifth and sixth carriages (30,32) are releasably secured by cam-operated latches. Bead rings (372) are locked to fifth and sixth carriages (30,32) by moving the carriages inwardly to actuate cam wedge ring (328). Expandable pneumatic lash-back tube (394) is then inflated to wrap the end (412) of carcass (273) about bead (372). |
