An ink jet recording apparatus having a conveying unit for conveying a recording medium to be recorded on, a body unit including an ink containing unit mounting section for mounting an ink containing unit for containing ink to be supplied to a recording head and a cassette mounting section for mounting a cassette for supplying the recording medium. Also provided are a recording unit including a recording head mounting section for mounting the recording head, a carriage unit for moving the recording unit in a predetermined direction, a recovery unit for restoring an ink discharge function, an electrical power source unit for actuating the ink jet recording apparatus, and an electrical circuit unit for controlling the conveying unit, the recording unit, the carriage unit and the recovery unit. The recording head mounting section and electrical circuit unit are provided within the body unit and the ink containing unit mounting section is provided at a position lower than the recording head mounting section and below the electrical circuit unit.
