PURPOSE:To obtain a polyvinyl alcohol-based copolymer, containing an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monoamide having a specific amide group as a copolymerization component, excellent in stability of an aqueous solution, barrier properties for permeation and absorption of water and oils and printability and useful as a sizing agent, etc., for paper. CONSTITUTION:This copolymer contains 0.1-20mol% ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monoamide having an amide group which is a group expressed by formula I (R1 is H, an alkyl or allyl; R2 to R4 each is H, an alkyl or allyl and two or more thereof are not simultaneously H; the total number of carbon atoms in R1 to R4 is >=4], e.g. N-t-octylmaleic acid monoamide expressed by formula II as a copolymerization component. |
