PURPOSE:To provide a binder for a shaped carbonaceous refractory, comprising pitches convertible into polymers by heat treatment together with a specific mixture within a prescribed temperature range, having a high carbonization yield in baking, excellent in executability, mechanical properties and spalling resistance and suitable as a furnace wall, etc., of an electric furnace, etc. CONSTITUTION:This binder for a shaped carbonaceous refractory is composed of pitches convertible into polymers at a temperature within the range of 150-350 deg.C when mixing a thermosetting resin having <=300 deg.C softening point, <=30% fraction insoluble in toluene and <=10% fraction insoluble in quinoline, e.g. a phenol resin with an inorganic compound used for producing the shaped carbonaceous refractory such as magnesia or alumina and heat-treating the resultant mixture. Furthermore, the binder is preferably blended with, e.g. carbonaceous powder having >=50% fixed carbon and 200-500 deg.C flow starting temperature when measuring the simple substance according to the Giesler fluidity and this shaped carbonaceous refractory is preferably produced by using the binder. |
