PURPOSE:To obtain a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer, comprising a copolymer containing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and a specific acrylamide as copolymerization components, excellent in stability of an aqueous solution, barrier properties for permeation and absorption of water and oils and printability and useful as a sizing agent, etc., for paper. CONSTITUTION:This polymer comprises a copolymer containing (A) 0.1-20mol% monomer expressed by the formula (R1 is H or methyl; R2 to R4 each is an alkyl or allyl; R5 is H, an alkyl or allyl; the total number of carbon atoms in R2 to R5 is >=4) and (B) 0.1-20mol% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (salt) as copolymerization components.
