PURPOSE: To manufacture a solidified fiber-reinforced composite structure without the need to form mandrels by integrally coupling crown-shaped stiffener members, spars, and shear ties to a planar or curved skin structure. CONSTITUTION: A unitary panel assembly includes hollow U-shaped crown stiffener members 310 and transversely extending shear ties 320 secured to a skin 330. Both the stiffener members 310 and the skin 330 consist of plural layers of fiber-reinforced prepreg composite matrix material. After assembly of the stiffener members 310, the shear ties 320, spars 35, 35' and the skin 330, tubular bags are inserted into the stiffener members 310. Then, the entire structure is disposed and sealed within an enclosure, a vacuum is impressed upon the enclosure, and the resulting assembly is placed in an autoclave. In the autoclave, the assembly is heated to a curing or consolidation temperature so that the composite matrix material is solidified. Structural efficiency is thus improved. |
