A cushioning unit (3) to be embedded in the heel portion of a mid-sole for a shoe comprises an upper member (6), a lower member (8) and an air control valve (4) with an intercommunicating conduit (5). The upper member has a lot of bellows holes formed vertically to its surface. In each bellows hole, a pair of frusto-conical bellows members (7) are oppositely inserted with a center ball (9) inbetween. A conical coil spring (10) is placed in each bellows member and a spring cap (11) stops up the hole. Pref. the bellows member and the center ball are made of elastic rubber. The intercommunicating conduit connects the cushioning unit with the air control valve.
