New fragment (I) of single stranded DNA (i) has at least 70% homology with either a 1215 bp sequence (A) or 609 bp sequence (B), both reproduced in the specification, or with their complementary strands or (ii) is produced by recombinant methods from the carnitine (cai) operon of E.coli (esp. strain 044K74) genomic DNA and contains (A) and/or (B).
