The inlet and delivery ports (5,6) ports are at opposite ends of the pump bore (2). The piston (8) is driven by the rod (13), with "lost motion" due to the movement of the plate (18) in the space (15). During the suction stroke (illustrated), fluid from the space (11) is forced through the ports (21,14) into the delivery chamber (9), while the non return valve (7) prevents a return of fluid from the delivery system. During delivery, the spigot (17) is forced into the seating (16) blocking the outlet port (6), the piston is carried forward on its delivery stroke, and fluid is drawn into the space (11) through the inlet port.
