PURPOSE: To optimize the output power for a specific spectral response by providing a distribution mean for connecting a pump light from a source to first and second stages such that less than one half of the pump light is converted, at the first stage, into a signal and an amplified natural radiation. CONSTITUTION: The amplifier has a first stage 21 connected with a second stage 32 through an ASE filter 33. A predetermined pump paget is obtained from a pump source 34 and a specified amount X of pump power is fed to the stage 31 while the remainder (1-X) is fed to the stage 32. X is selected normally between 20-30%. In order to determine the value of X for a specific amplifier, an amount of amplifier noise allowable for the system is determined at first. Subsequently, pump power paget is distributed appropriately to the first and second amplifier stages and the gain is optimized for the noise performance thereof. |
