The trimmer unit consists of spiral blades (2) mounted on a cylinder (1) which turns anti-clockwise on its axis, and a flat blade (3) mounted on a support (8). The blades are designed to remove any projecting loops or filaments from a layer of fabric (5) passing over an adjustable thrust member (7). The flat blade has elongated slots in it at an angle of 45 deg. to its cutting edge to give improved ventilation, and a coating of a cobalt- or nickel-based alloy, applied by a semi-transferred plasma procedure to give it a hardness of at least 38 HRC.
