In a TIG welding torch with an externally fitted auxiliary electrode on a shielding gas nozzle, the novelty is that the auxiliary electrode (HE) is mounted in the region of the level of the inner shielding gas outlet (G) to near the electrode tip and is connected to a lead (L2) extending axially in the torch handle (B). A capacitance is created between the lead and the welder's hand for generating, during h.f. operation, a displacement current which produces pre-ionisation in the shielding gas within the nozzle (K) for optimal ignition.
