Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1097333/C2/1> wherein R1 is CH3 or H, R2 is alkyl, benzyl, b -methoxyethyl or acyl and X is acyl or H (other than ethoxy- and methoxy-methylglyoxal di-(4 - methylthiosemicarbazone), a - ethoxyethylglyoxal dithiosemicarbazone, a - ethoxyethyl - di - (4 - methylthiosemicarbazone) and acetoxymethylglyoxal di - thiosemicarbazone) are prepared by methods known for preparing thiosemicarbazones from aldehydes and ketones. b - Acetoxy - a - ketopropionaldehyde is prepared by oxidation of a mixture of acetic acid and acrolein with SeO2.ALSO:Compositions for the treatment of a naplasmosis in cattle and tumours in mammals comprise a compound of the formula <FORM:1097333/A5-A6/1> (where R1 is CH3 or H, R2 is alkyl, benzyl or b -methoxyethyl or acyl and X is alkyl or H) and a carrier. The compositions may be administered either orally or parenterally.
