A sintered hard metal consisting of a bonding metal such as Co and the carbides, nitrides or silicides of the metals of Groups 4a, 5a or 6a of the Periodic system, at least 0À1% by weight of the carbides nitrides or silicides being in the form of filamentary monocrystals and the major portion being in normal particulate form. The preferred range of filamentary material is 0À5-1À5%. The following compositions are specified. 79.5% WC, 5.5% TaC, 5.5% TiC, 9.5% Co, with 1% of the WC as filamentary monocrystals; 74% WC, 5% TaC, 11% TiC, 10% Co, with 2.4% of the WC, 0.8% of the TaC and 1À9% of the TiC as filamentary monocrystals. |
