The wheel drive forces of the vehicle are determined and related to wheel drive force values with associated slip values. On the shift of the curve for the determined characteristics outside a prescribed region a warning signal (14) is generated. The slip value is derived from a comparison of the rotational speeds of the driven and the non-driven wheels (3). The wheel drive forces are determined from the measured data of the engine (2) and from the characteristic data of the vehicle (1). The wheel drive forces are estimated from a determination of vehicle acceleration.
