The pump supplies fuel from a supply tank (12) to the engine, having a high pressure pump (15) and a low pressure pump (10) which is connected prior to the high pressure pump. A valve (71) is located in the line (13,14,57,55,54) between the low pressure supply pump and the high pressure pump in order to be able to shut the connection between the two. The valve has an adjustable valve element (72) which is actuated in one direction by a spring (73). Relative to position, the valve is associated with the high pressure pump.
