A process and installation are claimed for the treatment of solid urban waste. Waste is compressed in a tubular canal (5), hermetically sealed at its inlet, and inclined downwards in the direction of travel at an angle of 1-10 degrees to horizontal. During passage along the canal the waste is heated (II) to at least 1100 degrees .C. to transform part of the carbon in the waste to carbon monoxide. Heating takes place in an annular canal (11), 8-15 cm wide. Any material unburned after this stage is burnt in a vertical counter current gas generator (16) where any remaining carbon is converted to carbon monoxide and non-combustible material such as ash and cinders are separated.
