In a process for continuous melting of scrap, using shredded scrap in a shaft furnace (1), the shredded scrap is introduced above the melting zone via a lock, and the metal bath and the slag are taken to a refining process. The hot exit gases from the refining process are recycled, above the lock (10) for charging the shredded scrap, into a preheating shaft (11) for pure scrap, and the pure scrap is introduced via the preheating shaft (11) into the melting zone. The process gases from the melting process are taken off below the preheating shaft (Fig.).
