The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder block with at least one cylinder bore defined therein, a cylinder head affixed to said cylinder block through a plurality of head bolts and enclosing said cylinder bore, an intake passage arrangement and an exhaust passage arrangement including a plurality of exhaust valves and a plurality of intake valves, said intake valves and exhaust valves being actuated by an intake camshaft and an exhaust camshaft via valve lifters which are slidably received in lifter guide holes formed in lifter guide walls, and a spark plug hole wall defining a spark plug hole for inserting a spark plug therein, formed in said cylinder head. The engine is improved in that the lifter guide walls are integrally connected to the spark plug hole wall of the cylinder head. <IMAGE>
