PURPOSE:To provide a new benzoic acid derivative and its polyvalent metal salt each useful as an electron-acceptable compound for heat-sensitive recording materials or as an additive for polymer materials. CONSTITUTION:The crystal of a benzoic acid derivative of formula I (R<1> to R<3> are H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl; R<4>, R<5> are H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy; X, Y are O, S) and the polyvalent metal salt of the benzoic acid derivative of formula I, e.g. the crystal of 2- phenyloxymethylcarbonylaminobenzoic acid and its magnesium salt. The compound of formula I is obtained, e.g. by reacting a compound of formula II (Z is halogen) with a 2-aminobenzoic acid derivative of formula III. The crystal of the compound of formula I is obtained by depositing the crystal from a solvent having a water content of <=50wt.% and containing the compound of formula I and subsequently isolating the crystal. The polyvalent metal salt of the compound of formula I is obtained by treating the water-soluble salt of the compound of formula I, such as its alkali metal salt, with a water-soluble polyvalent metal compound in the presence of water. |
