PURPOSE:To obtain a phenolic compound useful as an intermediate for phenol resin, bisphenols, alkylphenols and aniline by reacting an aromatic compound with oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst having low halogen content. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic compound is produced in liquid phase by reacting an aromatic compound with oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of a vanadium compound [preferably vanadium (III) acetylacetonate, vanadium oxide acetylacetonate or vanadium pentoxide] and a catalyst having a halogen content of <=0.15wt.% and produced by supporting a noble metal of the group VIII of the Periodic Table on a carrier. The reaction is carried out preferably by adding a diketone compound of formula I [R<1> and R<2> are each a (substituted)aryl or an alkyl] or formula II to the reactional system. |
