PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorobiphenyl derivative having high dielectric anisotropy, capable of decreasing threshold voltage, giving high potential retention and useful as a liquid crystal material for a word processor, etc., by reacting a specific cyclohexane derivative with a specific phenyl derivative in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:This compound of formula III is produced by reacting a compound of formula I (R is a 1-16C alkyl, a 2-16C alkenyl or a 2-16C alkoxyalkyl; J and K are each CH2CH2 or single bond; (n) is 0 or 1; the configuration of the cyclohexane ring is trans) with a compound of formula II (M is MgBr, MgCl, Mgl or Li; X and Y are each H or F; Z is F, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or difluoromethoxy) in the presence of a catalyst [preferably dichloro[1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]nickel(II)]. |
