ALCOHOL DERIVATIVE AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain a new alcohol derivative useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, organic electronic materials (especially ferroelectric liquid crystals), etc. CONSTITUTION:This alcohol derivative is expressed by formula I (R<1> is a 1-20C alkyl, a 2-20C alkoxyalkyl, H or an OH-protecting group; (m), (p) and (q) are each 0 or 1; (n) is 0-8; A<1> to A<3> each is group of formula II to IV, etc.; p+q is 0 or 1 and A<2> and A<3> are each a monocyclic group when A<1> is a condensed ring, and p+q is 1 or 2 when A<1> is a monocyclic group; when p+q=2, both of A<2> and A<3> are monocyclic groups and at least one of A<1> to A<3> is substituted with F), e.g. 2-(2,3-dichloro-4-(6-acetoxy-1-heptyl)phenyl)-5-decyloxypyrimidine. The compound of formula I can be produced by the asymmetric hydrolysis of an ester derivative of formula V in the presence of an esterase capable of preferentially hydrolyzing either one of optical isomers of the ester derivative.
