This process for the preparation of dicarboxylic acid copolymers comprises dissolving a dicarboxylic acid or its alkaline or ammonium salts in a deionized aqueous medium in the presence of small quantities of polyvalent metal ions in an inert atmosphere in which the mixture is heated and a water-soluble monomer and a water-soluble free radical generator are added as an initiator for the reaction, which takes place at a pH of between 4 and 6. The molecular weight of the copolymer is controlled very accurately using this process. These products have application in the formulation of detergent compositions for the washing of fabrics and others such as antifoulants.
