PURPOSE:To obtain high contrast characteristics in spite of a chevron structure. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element consists of substrates 2a, 2b comprising oriented films 4a, 4b, formed on a pair of transparent electrodes S, L, respectively, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 6 is interposed between the substrates 2a, 2b. The surface of the oriented films 4a, 4b is subjected to uniaxial orientation treatment. The liquid crystal 6 has a smectic layer structure in which the bending direction of the structure is the same as that of the uniaxial orientation treatment of the oriented films. The oriented films 4a, 4b consist of polyimide films produced by condensation of the main source materials of 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane as the amine component and 1,2,4,5- benzenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride as the carboxylic acid component. |
