PURPOSE:To provide a light amplifier, which uses a low-cost, highly reliable and comparatively short-wavelength laser diode as an excitation light source and is superior in excitation efficiency. CONSTITUTION:A light amplifier is constituted into a structure, wherein an optical fiber 1 doped with erbium atoms is arranged in the middle of the pass route of signal light 10 of a wavelength of a 1.5-mum band, at least one end 2a of an optical fiber 2 doped with aluminium atoms is coupled with a light source 3 of a luminous wavelength of a 0.8-mum band or narrower and the other end 2b is multiplexed and coupled with the fiber 1 doped with the erbium atoms. The fiber 2 is pumped with excitation light from the light source 3 and an emitted laser beam enters the fiber 1. In the fiber 1, the fiber 1 is pumped with the incident laser beam and the light 10, which enters through an optical fiber 9a for communication and passes through the fiber 1, is amplified and continues to emit to an optical fiber 9b for communication. |
