A remote control system having a television receiver (45) which can be controlled by infrared remote control signals. The remote control system comprises: remote transmitter means for transmitting remote control signals including a user-rotatable roller (2a) supported by a flexible axis (11), rotation detecting means (1) provided to detect the rotating direction and the amount of rotation of the roller, first detection circuit (3) for generating first control signals signifying the rotating direction and the amount of rotation in dependence on the signals from the rotation detecting means (1), a switch (2) for being responsive to the pushing activation of the roller (2a), second detecting means (4) for generating second control signals in response to the switch activation, and means (5,6) for encoding and transmitting remote command signals to the television receiver in accordance with the first or second control signals.
